Golden Gate Opus: Harmony of Sound and Citizens
May 5th, 2011The Marin Symphony has commissioned composer Rob Kapilow to create an opus that represents the sounds of Golden Gate Bridge to commemorate its 75th Anniversary in May 2012. Initially, hearing this news while sitting in traffic on the bridge sounded to me about as exciting as sitting in traffic on the bridge. However, after listening to Rob explain the project, it seems he is preparing for the project with a wonderfully innovative and symbolic approach; anyone interested in contributing their perspective or sound is being invited to do so in order to create a truly collaborative experience. Rob is collecting input and material from school children, commuters, veterans, and basically anyone who will stop and talk to him as he roams the bridge collecting inspiration. Additionally, enthusiasts are encouraged to visit the Golden Gate Opus Facebook page to offer input and be a part of the creative process.
It is so fabulous to see social media being utilized as more than just a platform for broadcasting, but as a means of creating a community of artistic expression. And what better subject than a structure that has so poignantly demonstrated the connection of people and place for generations!
